I was the main caregiver for my mom for the past 3 years. My mom is 91 years old, bedridden and has got dementia. My daily routine (even up till now) showering/assisting the caregiver with showering, cleaning up her room and bed on a daily basis, checking on her well-being so as to prevent bed sores or rashes, feeding her via tube feeding and companionship.
I am experienced in taking care of dementia, parkinson's and stroke patients and these include night surveillance, companionship, housekeeping (laundry and mopping), meal arrangement, companionship. I find that most elderly patients want companionship, along with some encouragement and light hearted moments. I like to laugh and generally, I will joke with my elderly patients when the opportunities arise. At the end of the day, all they want is someone who cares, listens to them and has empathy.
I am a certified personal trainer and I do at times engaged some form of light exercises with my elderly patient.
